El peligro de animar a los niños para que sean perfectos
¡Buenas lectores y lectoras! Ya estamos a mediados de julio, espero y deseo que estéis pasando un feliz verano. Hoy os traigo una nueva reflexión educativa sobre el peligro que tenemos los adultos de favorecer o animar a los niños para que sean perfectos.
Antes de explicar porque un niño/a puede ser perfeccionista, las señales de que un niño puede ser perfeccionista, las consecuencias de exigir el perfeccionismo en los niños y qué pueden hacer las familias para estimular el desarrollo de sus hijos sin presionarles para que sean perfectos, quiero partir de ejemplos de la vida real para ilustrar esta entrada.
Punto de partida
Si Luis saca un 4 en conocimiento del medio se le presiona para alcanzar el 10 porque su familia le exige que saque esas notas. El niño se frustra porque su familia le presiona porque ellos quieren la “excelencia” en sus hijos, trayendo como resultado baja autoestima, frustración, malestar interior y ansiedad.
María tiene 11 años y juega al fútbol femenino desde el año pasado. Su familia no para de recriminarle todo lo que hace mal en sus partidos además la graban para explicarle en casa los errores que ha cometido en cada partido porque su familia quiere que llegue a ser profesional.
Cada vez que la familia de María le recrimina los errores que comete en los partidos se siente más insegura y no le apetece jugar al fútbol que es su deporte favorito, por eso está empezando a odiarlo.
Estos ejemplos que acabo de exponer es la cultura del esfuerzo llevado al límite cuando queremos que nuestros hijos sean perfectos y tengan éxito en el futuro.
¿Por qué un niño/a puede llegar a ser perfeccionista?
Un niño/a puede ser perfeccionista porque puede haber características que puedan hacer que un niño o niña sea más o menos perfeccionista, la realidad es que es algo que se aprende con las situaciones, las experiencias diarias y vivencias en su entorno familiar. Existen varias razones para que un niño/a pueda llegar a ser perfeccionista:
Por ganarse el amor incondicional de su familia y por ser aceptada en ella
Un niño puede pensar que si llegar perfecto lo querrán más y será aceptado en su familia. Por eso pueden aparecer la competitividad con hermanos, primos o amigos o sentimiento de culpa por no llegar a ser perfecto.
Para compensar los fracasos en los estudios o en el deporte
Tal vez un niño/a haya tenido problemas en los estudios por eso busca la perfección en el deporte o viceversa.
Por imitar a su familia
Cuando un niño/a observa que su familia es perfeccionista, imita ese comportamiento para complacerlos y sentirse que pertenece a esa familia.
Es necesario que las familias tengan en cuenta estas razones para evitar que esto ocurra porque el perfeccionismo puede traer a largo plazo problemas emocionales y sociales cuando sea adulto.
Señales de que un niño puede ser perfeccionista
Si estás leyendo esta entrada puedes pensar que tu hijo/a es perfeccionista pero no lo tienes claro del todo. Si deseas valorarlo, sigue leyendo porque a continuación puedes comprobar algunas señales que demuestran este comportamiento:
- Establecen metas inalcanzables porque quieren ser perfectos.
- No están satisfechos con los resultados si son positivos porque no cumplen con sus expectativas.
- Se siente fracasado delante de su familia y amigos si no cumple sus objetivos.
- Cuando son pequeños no se les puede calmar ante una rabieta cuando algo les sale mal.
- No aprecian la experiencia de participar en los juegos porque siempre quieren ser los mejores en todo.
Consecuencias de animar a los niños para que sean perfectos
Todos los adultos debemos tener muy en cuenta que podemos educar a nuestros hijos/as en la cultura del esfuerzo, podemos y les debemos pedir, no hay duda, pero todo tiene un límite. Ese obstáculo, que debería ser insuperable, es la de acompañar lo que le pedimos con amor incondicional y con afectividad.
A largo plazo, exigir tanto a los niños puede resultar perjudicial ya que:
- Limita su independencia y autonomía para decidir por sí mismos y tomar sus propias decisiones. Estimula el miedo al fracaso al exigirles demasiado y por la presión que le puede generar.
- Perjudica su autoestima y su autoconcepto porque creen que lo que hacen nunca es suficiente y se convierten en adultos inseguros que piensan que no son lo suficientemente buenos y dependen siempre de la opinión de su familia.
- Les impide disfrutar de su infancia porque les quita tiempo de juego y de diversión bajo la responsabilidad que proyectamos en ellos además se les impide equivocarse, dejar libre su imaginación o pasar tiempo con otros pequeños de su edad.
¿Qué pueden hacer las familias para estimular el desarrollo de sus hijos sin presionarles para que sean perfectos?
La mayoría de las familias quieren lo mejor para sus hijos, por eso se preocupan por educarlos y prepararlos para el día de mañana. Todo esto tiene sentido y es comprensible pero también es necesario, permitirles disfrutar cada etapa de la vida sin exigirles más de lo que puedan dar. Lo que importa es hacer felices a los niños más que tener hijos perfectos.
A continuación, aporto una serie de recomendaciones para que te ayuden en el día a día:
- Permite que los niños aprendan a su propio ritmo adaptando las exigencias a cada etapa de desarrollo.
- Anima a los niños a equivocarse porque es algo normal y beneficioso para cualquier persona porque de los errores se aprende más que de los aciertos.
- Recordarles a los hijos que el amor es incondicional hacia ellos.
- Fíjate en el proceso más que en el resultado. Elogia el esfuerzo, la creatividad, la perseverancia, el trabajo en equipo, etc.
- Ayúdale a manejar la decepción, lidiar con el fracaso y enséñale que lo perfecto no tiene que ser lo mejor.
- Enséñale a establecer metas realistas para que analice que salió bien y lo que no tan bien para poder aprender y mejorar.
- Sé un buen modelo a seguir, reconoce tus errores y fracasos como algo natural en la vida para aprender el mejor camino hacia el éxito.
- Motívales para que luchen por sus sueños.

En definitiva, ya hemos visto el peligro que tiene favorecer o animar a los niños para que sean perfectos y las consecuencias que esto supone en los niños. Es necesario que los adultos apoyen a sus hijos para que se den cuenta de que la vida no es una competición para ser mejor o peor, que la vida está para vivirla, para aprender cosas nuevas cada día y, sobre todo, para disfrutarla en compañía de nuestros seres más queridos.
